CDex è in grado di estrarre dati dai CD Audio (CD Ripping), come file WAV o compresso tramite encoder (come Lame MP3, Internal MP2, APE lossles, Ogg Vorbis, (Fraunhofer) MP3, NTT VQF, FAAC, Windows WMA8). E' possibile convertire da un formato a un altro tra quelli supportati. Inoltre, CDex supporta i tag ID3 v1 e v2, che possono essere inseriti automaticamente come parte del processo di estrazione; accede al database online CDDB per avere sempre i titoli degli album (anche quelli che non si conoscono); supporta playlist in formato M3U e PLS.
